Finding Humor in Hard Times

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

I believe it was Mark Twain that said, “Humor is tragedy plus time.” At least that’s what the Google result told me. Regardless, it’s an accurate statement.

I feel like there are times in our lives where things aren’t going great and we fail to see the good or the humor. Sometimes, it does take time for us to find the silver lining or to be able to have a positive outlook.

That’s what I enjoy about comedy. If I do my job correctly and prepare, I can help people forget about their troubles even for a second. I like that laughter is a healing mechanism and can brighten up even the worst days.

I know when I’ve had bad days, it’s easy for me to turn to Youtube and pull up videos of some of my favorite comedians. It helps me forget. It helps me laugh in the face of things that are bothering me. It helps me realize that eventually, turmoil and stress can turn into jokes. Eventually, whatever has me down will be a punchline because I overcame it.

It’s also pretty cool to know that other people have gone through the same things as you. Whether you are dealing with health issues, relationship troubles or family things, you can find a comedian or joke that helps you see things from a new perspective. They can help you put a humorous spin or something that worries or scares you.

So today, we may be facing a lot of tragedies. We may be facing impossible odds. But I think we can get through it. I think laughter and jokes can put us in a better place and help us get through.

So if you’re feeling a little blue, maybe turn on a comedy or find some stand-up that you enjoy. Maybe sign up for an open mic and tell some stories or jokes that can offer help to others. Maybe just have a fun conversation with someone and help them smile. You’d be surprised how the smallest things can change someone’s day.
